We’ve all heard it, and a lot of us have said it: “I could write a book about…” or “I have a great idea for a [fill in the blank: blog, novel, film, song...]“. The difference between those who talk about it and those who do it is commitment. The former wait for time, inspiration or a windfall. The latter paste their seat to a chair, fire up the computer (or get out the notepad), and do it.
Inspiration plays a role. So does ability. But both play second fiddle to sheer, dogged determination. If writing is your dream, start today.
Here’s some of the best advice I’ve come across:
- People often email Patti Digh, asking for advice on how to write a book. Her successful work, Life Is a Verb: 37 Days to Wake Up, Be Mindful, and Live Intentionally
is conversational, inspiring and beautifully crafted. Her blog has a large readership, including people hoping they can duplicate her success. So it isn’t surprising she posted this to her blog, “how to write (a book). a wee rant.”
- Madisen Harper gave an eBook publishing workshop on a cruise from Sydney to Hawaii. Her advice to the aspiring writers in her audience was liberating. Why wait to become one of the 2% who will see their manuscript reach print when you can find an audience online? Here’s an excerptfrom her Web site.
- For writers (and dreamers) wondering if a Web site or blog is a good investment of their time, Jane Friedman has this advice.
- If you want a book that will provide inspiration, exercises, and a companion on your writing journey, you’ll find some I’ve found helpful over the years on my Favorite Books page.
